Greenspire School is hiring a Special Education Teacher for the upcoming school year. Must have teacher certification and endorsement.

The Greenspire School offers a unique educational program for high school students based on purposeful connections between individuals, communities, and the environment. Under the direction of the Head of School, the Teacher will plan and deliver course instruction for high school students. Additionally, the Teacher will collaborate with other instructors to design project-based learning units that connect to multiple disciplines and/or real-world issues.

The Greenspire School is seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our team as a full-time High School Special Education Instructor. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and implementing effective instructional strategies to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities. The Special Education Teacher will collaborate with colleagues, parents, and support staff to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that promotes the academic, social, and emotional development of students.

Essential Functions:

  • Teach individuals and small groups of students inside and outside of the classroom
  • Prepare and executing lessons and resources
  • Assess the student’s work done in class
  • Develop and adapt individualized teaching methods that are suitable for each student
  • Use appropriate methods and equipment to stimulate an interesting learning environment
  • Collaborate with instructors and staff to build a better learning environment for students
  • Update parents on their child’s progress and give recommendations to promote a better learning environment at home
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records, and prepare reports on students and activities, as required by laws, school policies, and administrative regulations
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and policies and procedures to maintain order among students
  • Attend staff development events to improve skills and receive help and feedback from colleagues
  • Attend school events to better understand student interest and personalities outside of the regular classroom, build strong relationships with students and aid in the strengthening of their self-confidence while inspiring them to achieve high goals
  • Refer attendance, health, and psychological/emotional problems to the Head of School
  • Accept a share of responsibility for committees and co-curricular activities as assigned
  • Actively contribute to all faculty meetings (seminars, conferences, workshops, planning sessions, so forth) as required unless excused by the Head of School

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings
  • Engage in lifelong learning with respect to training, in-services and courses of study
  • Help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values
  • Be available and participate with PBL integration of curriculum with High School Core Instructors
  • Conduct other duties related to the instructor’s duties as assigned by the Head of School.

Qualifications:

  1. Valid driver’s license
  2. Appropriate State of Michigan teaching certification. Preferred: SM (Learning Disabilities)
  3. Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  4. Proven experience in teaching students with diverse learning needs at the high school level.
  5. Knowledge of and experience with various special education strategies, accommodations, and assistive technologies.
  6. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  7. Patience, empathy, and a passion for making a positive impact on the lives of students with special needs.
